Major Literacy Boost for Primary Children

Primary schools across Stoke are set to benefit from a significant literacy boost this month, thanks to Bookmark Reading Charity.

The initiative, part of the charity’s acclaimed Roots to Reading Programme will bring new opportunities to inspire a love of reading among young learners.

Bookmark Reading Charity has awarded 29 primary schools across the area a package worth £2,000 each, comprising 200 new books alongside targeted teaching resources. The aim is to help primaries enhance their whole-school reading culture and encourage pupils’ desire to read for pleasure.

To celebrate the programme’s launch, pupils at St. John’s CE(A) Primary School were treated to workshops with author John Dougherty; a special ‘unboxing’ of the new books; and a welcome visit from Lord Mayor of Stoke, Councillor Joan Bell.

The programme comes at an important time for Stoke, where Key Stage 2 reading outcomes remain below the national average. One in four children in England leave primary school unable to read well, a gap that disproportionately affects children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Currently, around 70% of pupils in the Stoke area meet the expected reading standard, underlining the need for focused support to help more children reach this milestone. Research from the Education Endowment Fund shows that only 10% of children who fall behind in primary school go on to pass English and Maths GCSE.

Roots to Reading takes a structured approach by equipping schools with carefully selected, high-quality books and resources that represent the diversity of classrooms in the area, to embed reading for pleasure into everyday learning. From refreshing classroom libraries to supporting guided reading activities, the programme is designed to make reading more accessible, consistent, and enjoyable for pupils.

Research shows that children who enjoy reading are more likely to achieve better academic outcomes, alongside wider benefits for wellbeing and life chances. By focusing on both enjoyment and attainment, Roots to Reading aims to create strong foundations for future success.

With 29 primary schools selected to take part, the programme represents a significant investment in Stoke’s young readers, helping to ensure more children can develop the skills, confidence and enthusiasm they need to thrive.
