What’s next: Founder Kai McConomy’s future plans include clothing swaps, community events and a Stay Tidy running club.
Tamworth shoppers looking for something different from mainstream fashion will have a new place to hunt for one-off finds this Saturday when Stay Tidy opens its doors in College Lane.
The new independent store is the latest venture from 26-year-old Lichfield entrepreneur Kai McConomy, who has already sold thousands of vintage and preloved pieces online and previously traded from Birmingham’s Custard Factory.
Opening at 5 College Lane, Tamworth, on Saturday 3 October 2026, Stay Tidy will offer an ever-changing collection of affordable branded vintage and preloved clothing, including streetwear, sportswear, outdoorwear and sought-after 90s and 2000s pieces.
Students and young adults have always made up a significant part of Kai’s customer base, and the new shop’s location, just a stone’s throw from Tamworth College, puts Stay Tidy right in the heart of one of its key markets.
Kai said:
“I want Stay Tidy to bring something different to Tamworth. Vintage is about finding that one piece you love that you aren’t going to see everyone else wearing.
“I want the shop to have a really good vibe, affordable, welcoming and somewhere you can come in, go through the rails and never quite know what you’re going to find.”
Kai’s route into business began after completing his A-levels, when he went on to successfully complete a Level 2 Retailer apprenticeship.
He launched his own vintage clothing business in December 2020 and has since built up a loyal customer base, selling thousands of individual pieces through platforms including Depop and eBay.
He later traded from a retail space at Birmingham’s Custard Factory before deciding to take the next step and open a permanent shop of his own. Stay Tidy will continue selling online alongside the new Tamworth store.
The store is aimed particularly at people looking for something more individual than traditional high-street fashion, with stock changing regularly so customers can expect something different each time they visit.
Students will receive a 15% discount, while Stay Tidy will also run a loyalty scheme offering customers 50% off a purchase after collecting five stamps.
To celebrate the opening, every customer who makes a purchase on launch day will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win a vintage Barcelona football shirt, with the winner announced the following day.
Customers will also receive 10% off at local coffee shop Crave, as part of a launch-day collaboration between the two independent Tamworth businesses.
With the shop opening in the run-up to Christmas, Kai also hopes the constantly changing stock will appeal to people looking for unusual, one-off gifts, particularly for teenagers and young adults.
Kai added:
“A lot of people want clothes with a bit more individuality now. You can find great brands and pieces without having to spend a fortune, and because most of what we sell is one-off, there’s that feeling of finding something that’s completely yours.”
As well as giving clothing a second life, Kai hopes Stay Tidy will become more than simply a shop.
Future plans include clothing swaps, community events and a Stay Tidy running club, helping to build a local community around the brand.
Kai is also keen to work with young people locally and share his experience of going from a retail apprenticeship to building his own business.
Stay Tidy opens on Saturday 3 October 2026 at 5 College Lane, Tamworth, B79 7LP.
