Drivers in Meir are being urged to check new School Streets restrictions as the zone around Sandon Primary Academy expands to cover Anson Road, Loxley Place, Stockfield Road and more of Harrowby Road.

Drivers in Meir are being urged to check restrictions around Sandon Primary Academy as Stoke-on-Trent City Council extends its School Streets scheme to cover more roads.

The existing scheme on Harrowby Road was introduced in September 2025 and restricts non-residential vehicles from entering the School Streets zone around Sandon Primary Academy and Rosy Cheeks Nursery at school start and finish times.

Following feedback received since the original scheme was introduced, the council has decided to extend the area covered.

Anson Road, Loxley Place and Stockfield Road are being added to the scheme, alongside an extension further along Harrowby Road.

The council's consultation documents state that the amended Experimental Traffic Regulation Order comes into operation on Wednesday 2 September 2026.

When do the restrictions apply?

According to information issued directly to residents and parents by Stoke-on-Trent City Council, the restrictions apply during term time between:

8.15am and 9.15am

2.45pm and 3.45pm

The council's existing School Streets information also lists these times for Sandon Primary Academy and Rosy Cheeks Nursery.

Drivers should pay particular attention to the signs in the area, as enforcement is carried out using traffic enforcement cameras.

A Penalty Charge Notice can be issued to the registered owner of a vehicle which enters the restricted area without an exemption while the restrictions are in force.

Which Meir roads are affected?

The extended School Streets area covers:

• Harrowby Road
• Anson Road
• Loxley Place
• Stockfield Road

The council's live traffic consultation system now lists all four roads as part of its School Streets programme.

The changes are intended to prevent non residential cars, vans and lorries from entering the designated roads during the morning and afternoon restrictions.

Residents and businesses with vehicles registered to an address within the restricted area can apply to the council for a free exemption.

Emergency vehicles and other authorised vehicles are also exempt from School Streets restrictions.

Why has the scheme been extended?

Stoke-on-Trent City Council says Sandon Primary Academy and Rosy Cheeks Nursery were originally selected because of ongoing traffic issues affecting parents, residents and businesses with school traffic.

School Streets are designed to reduce the number of vehicles immediately around schools at busy times, helping children cross roads more safely, reducing congestion and improving traffic flow.

The council also says the schemes are intended to improve air quality and encourage more children to walk and cycle to school.

The authority's wider School Streets programme now operates at a number of schools across Stoke-on-Trent.

Further parking restrictions are also planned

The changes go beyond the School Streets zone itself.

A statutory public notice published on 26 August confirms that new no waiting restrictions are also being introduced around Normacot Grange Road.

These include restrictions on both sides of Dentdale Close and Kingsdale Close for 10 metres from Normacot Grange Road, together with additional sections of Normacot Grange Road.

The council says the School Streets scheme will continue to be monitored to determine whether further changes are needed.

Residents can have their say

As the changes are being introduced through an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order, people can experience the amended scheme while the council monitors how it works.

The information supplied to residents states that comments or objections can be submitted until 5pm on Monday 1 March 2027.

A note on the published times

There is currently a discrepancy between documents published about the extension. The information supplied to residents states that the afternoon restriction ends at 3.45pm, which also matches the council's main School Streets webpage. However, the statutory public notice published on 26 August gives an afternoon period ending at 4pm.

Drivers should therefore check the restriction signs displayed on the affected roads before entering the zone.
