Travel made easier: New inclusive transport campaign launches

A new campaign to help make public transport more inclusive for people with disabilities has launched across Staffordshire.

The Celebrating Differences Inclusive Travel campaign has been developed by people who have lived experience of disabilities, sight loss and neurodivergence and aims to help more residents feel confident getting around by making everyday travel simpler and more inclusive.

By raising awareness of the barriers disabled people can face, which includes promoting existing resources and guidance for transport operators, the campaign aims to encourage positive, inclusive changes across local transport networks.

One of the resources available is a set of Travel Assistance Cards, designed to support people who may feel unsure or anxious about travelling by bus.

The cards allow passengers to discreetly show drivers the support they need without having to ask out loud. This can include asking for extra time to sit down or for the driver to face them when speaking.

Martin Rogerson, Cabinet Member for Health and Care at Staffordshire County Council, said: “With such a simple idea, this scheme has the potential to transform people’s lives.

“Everyone should feel confident and comfortable when using public transport and the campaign and the new flash cards will help remove barriers that some residents face every day. What makes this project especially powerful is that it has been co‑produced from start to finish by people with disabilities, ensuring it reflects their lived experience.

“I am very much looking forward to seeing this scheme put into practice and giving everyone the chance to go where they want and access any and all opportunities.”

The campaign will run until September 2026 and includes dedicated webpages with practical travel resources, information on the rights of disabled passengers, and training resources for drivers and transport staff.

The flash cards can be picked up in person from main libraries across Staffordshire or downloaded from the Staffordshire County Council Website.

More information on the campaign can be found on its dedicated webpage.
