Review | Annie [Regent Theatre]

You can bet your bottom dollar that there's plenty to enjoy at Stoke-on-Trent's Regent Theatre this week, as the much-loved musical Annie brings familiar songs, colourful characters and some fantastic standout moments to the stage!

Set in 1930s New York, the story follows the optimistic young orphan Annie as she escapes the clutches of the wonderfully wicked Miss Hannigan and finds herself in the world of billionaire Oliver Warbucks.

Claire Sweeney takes on the role of Miss Hannigan, bringing plenty of personality and comedy to one of musical theatre's most recognisable villains. Her scenes provide some of the show's lighter moments, while the young cast brings energy and enthusiasm to the orphanage.

Musically, audiences will have plenty to enjoy. From the energetic It's the Hard-Knock Life to the mischievous Easy Street and, of course, the iconic Tomorrow, the familiar soundtrack remains one of the production's biggest strengths.

There are standout moments throughout, particularly when the ensemble comes together for the bigger musical numbers. The contrast between the gloomy orphanage and the grandeur of Warbucks' mansion also helps bring the story to life.

Most audiences will already know the story, and while there are few surprises, that's part of its charm. The humour, heart and instantly recognisable songs make for an enjoyable evening at the theatre.

Annie might be a familiar favourite, but this production proves there's still plenty of life in the classic musical. A good, feel-good family show with enough memorable moments to leave audiences humming the songs long after the curtain falls.

Annie is at the Regent Theatre until Saturday 17th October.
