Review | Operation Mincemeat (Regent Theatre, Hanley)

Operation Mincemeat is a show that is already celebrated in the West End and on Broadway, and it is FINALLY on the road in the UK, with our very own Regent Theatre in Hanley one of the stops on this 40-week tour. This inventive musical proves that its reputation is thoroughly deserved (and that touring productions can carry every bit of the magic!)

Telling the extraordinary true story of the World War II deception operation, the show blends history, comedy, and theatre into something wholly unique and is a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud and surprisingly moving production. It’s a fantastic telling of an unbelievable real-life mission, delivered with clarity, confidence, and no shortage of flair.

A huge part of the production’s success lies with its phenomenal cast. Christian Anderson, Sean Carey, Holly Sumpton, Jamie Rose-Monk and Charlotte Hanna-Williams deliver this show with precision, charisma, and an infectious sense of fun. What’s particularly impressive is the show’s rapid-fire character switching, something that could easily feel chaotic, but here is executed with absolute finesse. The transitions are seamless, often happening in the blink of an eye, and add an extra layer of ingenuity to an already sharp production.

This coming Wednesday (30th April) will mark 83 years since Glyndwr Michael (as Major William Martin) was found by a Spanish fisherman that leads me to a very special mention to the way the writers and directors have ensured that Glyndwr is honoured in such a poignant way at the end of the show. It was an extremely touching moment shared by those in the theatre.

There’s a reason Operation Mincemeat has captured audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, and this touring version makes it clear that its appeal is universal. Smart, fast-paced, and brilliantly performed, it’s a production that leaves you feeling entertained, impressed and at times extremely emotional.

This is more than just a touring show, it’s an opportunity to witness one of the most celebrated modern musicals at the top of its game. Smart, seamless, and brilliantly performed, Operation Mincemeat is an absolutely incredible and not to be missed!
