Cinema on the Stones returns for a Summer of Free Family Films in Newcastle-under-Lyme

Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre is set to transform into an open air cinema once again this summer as Cinema on the Stones returns for 2026, bringing free family film screenings and activities to the heart of the town.

Delivered by Newcastle-under-Lyme BID in partnership with Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, the events will make full use of the town's digital screen on the High Street, funded through the Government's Future High Streets Fund as part of the Borough Council's wider investment in the town centre.

Cinema on the Stones gets underway on Sunday 2nd August at 12pm with Disney and Pixar's Inside Out. Bursting with humour, heart and unforgettable characters, the much loved family favourite follows 11 year old Riley as Joy, Sadness and the rest of her emotions help her navigate life's biggest changes.

The event also takes place alongside Castle Pre-Loved, Newcastle's growing monthly pre-loved shopping event, offering visitors the chance to browse stalls packed with clothing, toys, homeware and hidden treasures before settling down to enjoy the film.

Cinema on the Stones returns on Sunday 16th August as part of the monthly Castle Artisan Market, with a double bill of Disney favourite The Little Mermaid at 10.30am, followed by the nostalgic adventure classic Hook at 1pm.

Visitors are encouraged to embrace the theme, with a free fancy dress competition celebrating mermaids and pirates. One winner from each category will be chosen on the day, with prizes up for grabs. Free popcorn and pick 'n' mix will also be available for everyone attending, alongside themed children's activities.

People are encouraged to bring along their own picnic blankets or folding chairs for both events, although there will also be plenty of opportunities to enjoy food and drink from Newcastle town centre's cafés, restaurants, market traders and independent businesses while watching the films.

"Outdoor cinema has always proved incredibly popular in Newcastle-under-Lyme, so we're delighted to be bringing Cinema on the Stones back for 2026.

"By programming the screenings alongside existing events such as Castle Pre-Loved and the Castle Artisan Market, we're creating even more reasons for people to spend the day in the town centre. Visitors can browse the markets, enjoy something to eat and drink from our fantastic independent businesses, then sit back and enjoy a free family film. It's about bringing everything together to create a day out for visitors while supporting the businesses and existing events."

Cinema on the Stones forms part of Newcastle-under-Lyme BID's packed summer programme, which also includes the Castle Food & Drink Festival, Get Creative in Castle and Newcastle Jazz & Blues Festival.
