Waitress is a musical that perfectly balances humour, heartbreak and hope, and the current production at the Regent Theatre in Hanley delivers all three in abundance.
This production feels intimate, which is a very rare occurrence in the 1,600-seater Regent Theatre, however this draws the audience into Jenna's world from the opening number and keeps them emotionally invested until the end.
The entire cast is exceptional, with every performance feeling genuine and full of heart. Jenna (Carrie Hope Fletcher) is simply mesmerising. Carrie, quite simply, steals the show, with a breathtaking vocal performance that showcases both incredible power and remarkable vulnerability. Every song is delivered impeccably, and the audience hangs on every word, particularly during the show's more emotionally driven moments.
The supporting cast is equally impressive, with Becky (Sandra Marvin) bringing warmth, wit and powerhouse vocals, Dawn (Evelyn Hoskins) delivering impeccable comic timing and charm, and Dr Pomatter (Dan Partridge) providing the perfect balance of awkwardness and sincerity. Ogie, who is played by local actor Mark Anderson, is an absolute delight, earning huge laughs throughout the evening, while Old Joe (Les Dennis) adds genuine heart to every scene. Earl (Mark Willshire) and Cal (Dan O'Brien) complete a cast that feels perfectly balanced, with every performer making their character memorable.
The show's clever humour, heartfelt storytelling and outstanding performances make this production one of the finest to grace the Regent stage.
Whether you're already a fan of Waitress or discovering it for the first time, this tour is an absolute treat. With a phenomenal cast, an intimate atmosphere and a leading performance from Carrie Hope Fletcher that is nothing short of sensational, this is musical theatre at its very best.
