Leek’s new state-of-the-art health and wellbeing centre in Brough Park is set to open to the public in August.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council is leading the major redevelopment project to expand and modernise the centre and develop the outdoor area to encourage people to be active in a less formal setting.
The construction work is now finished, the pools have been filled and the new gym equipment will be delivered in the coming weeks. Final testing and commissioning is now taking place and we’ll be announcing the opening date once this phase is finished.
MyActive, the Council’s leisure partner, will also be launching a pre-sale programme soon followed by details of memberships, swimming lesson enrolment, and other activities. Follow their social channels to keep up-to-date – Instagram: myactiveleek and Facebook: MyActive Leek
Councillor Matt Swindlehurst, Cabinet member for Leisure and Tourism, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to announce the news we’ve all been waiting for – the doors will re-open and we’ll be welcoming people back in just a few weeks!
“It’s fantastic to be in the final stages of this major redevelopment project which will really wow everyone who visits. The centre is looking amazing – it’s going to be a game-changer for the people of Leek and the wider Moorlands.
“Having access to high quality leisure facilities which promote active lives and provide social spaces is a priority for the Council – it underpins our physical and mental wellbeing and supports healthy lifestyles and community connections. We’re thrilled to be providing that for all our Moorlands residents and visitors here in Leek and developing plans for investments in Biddulph and Cheadle.
“We’ll be confirming the opening date as soon as we can and information about memberships, swimming lessons and classes that will be taking place at MyActive Leek are also coming soon so please look out for further details. The countdown is now well and truly on!”
The redevelopment includes:
- A new 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool and a larger teaching pool
- A larger gym and second group exercise studio and a new, dedicated indoor cycling studio
- A community wellness suite with space to expand referral based services
- An indoor/soft adventure play area
- New reception space with toilets, café seating and servery
The redevelopment has been funded by UK Government, the District Council, Sport England through the National Lottery, and Salix who are helping to fund the decarbonisation measures.
Alongside the physical improvements to the building and the facilities it hosts, the Council has also worked with Sport England on the innovative Active Environments development in the area outside the centre.
New outdoor gym equipment is being installed alongside a pétanque court, table tennis tables, a chess board, and other features including Active Trail signage, and people will be able to start using these facilities from around the end of July when the outdoor work is complete.
Councillor Swindlehurst added: “We want to provide as many opportunities as we can for people to move more everyday and informal spaces such as this provide people with the spaces and equipment to be able to make being active a regular part of their lives.
“So I’m pleased that people will be able to use these new facilities when they’re ready without having to wait for the centre to open a couple of weeks later.”
Table tennis bats and balls and pétanque balls will be available to hire from the centre from August but anyone with their own equipment is welcome to use the amenities when they open.
There’s more information about the redevelopment on their website.
