A day to go down in history! Tamworth care home residents visit RAF Museum

Residents at a care home in Tamworth enjoyed a nostalgic journey back in time during a visit to a RAF Museum.

The team at Care UK’s Arkall Manor, on Ashby Road, organised a special trip for residents to visit the RAF Museum, in Cosford.

During the visit, the residents received a guided tour of the museum, where they were able to look at memorabilia and explore key points throughout history, including the Battle of Britian. 

Among the visitors was 89-year-old John Farley, whose fascination with aircrafts first began as a young boy when he would watch planes as they flew above him during World War Two.

John began his early career serving in the Navy and RAF, where he was positioned as a petty officer and navigator on gnats for 12 years. After leaving the Navy, the veteran’s love for aircrafts inspired him to earn his pilot license in his 30s, becoming a flying instructor at first before achieving his own commercial license to fly planes all over the world. 

John has passed his love for aviation down through the generations, with his daughter and son both currently working for a British airline and airport. 

John said:

“I really enjoyed the day, especially seeing the Spitfire and Hurricane planes! 

“It brought back memories of watching the planes fly over during WWII when I was a young boy and being fascinated by them.” 

John’s experience was part of Care UK’s Wishing Tree initiative, in which each care home encourages residents to put forward their dreams, allowing them to reconnect with a past hobby or career, or try something completely new.
