Review by Georgia Thomas
Having studied this play over 15 years ago for GSCE English Literature, and remembering it being quite intriguing and frightfully clever, I was very happy when I was invited to watch the play at The Regent Theatre in Hanley!
The set is a true spectacle to look at, and is so wonderfully powerful as the whole play is set there, never needing to venture elsewhere. If, like my mum (Nikki T from 6 Towns Radio) you aren't already aware of the story, (and you're into CSI-type-who-dunnits), you're in for a treat!
The mystery unravels throughout the play, and you soon think you can predict where it is going... or can you? Possibly not... It takes you on a journey of feeling shame and disgust with the affluent, selfish main characters whilst also observing the abject poverty amongst Britain's 1912 working class, before finally leading you to reflect on your own responsibilities and treatment of others.
We both throughly enjoyed the mesmerising acting, and depth of the characters, and were chatting the whole drive home about our own personal interpretation about the storys conclusion.
See what YOU think? This masterpiece is on at the Regent Theatre until Saturday 28th September - At 1 hour 40 minutes. No interval, so go the loo beforehand!
