The New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme is set to premiere Arthur Berry’s long-lost play, Whatever Happened to Phoebe Salt, from May 31 to June 21, 2025.
This production is a highlight of the Arthur Berry 100 centenary celebrations, honouring the Stoke-on-Trent-born playwright, poet, and painter. Written in 1988 for the New Vic’s theatre-in-the-round but never previously staged, the play has been brought to life under the direction of Abbey Wright.
Set in the industrial heartland of Stoke-on-Trent, the narrative follows Phoebe Salt, a meat market worker who dreams of a more glamorous life. After hours, she rehearses as a Showman’s Assistant, yearning for escape. When a television opportunity arises, Phoebe must decide whether to seize it or remain in her familiar world. Berry’s script captures the resilience and aspirations of working-class life, reflecting his deep connection to the region.
This premiere not only showcases Berry’s storytelling but also celebrates his legacy as a significant cultural figure in the Potteries. The production is part of a broader initiative to recognise Berry's contributions to literature and art.
