Enter N-u-L Gardening Competition

Green-fingered gardeners can play their part in a collective effort to ensure Newcastle-under-Lyme looks its best this summer.

Entries are now being accepted for Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s local gardening competitions. The popular annual contests – part of the borough’s Heart of England in Bloom campaign – encourage residents, schoolchildren, allotment holders, community groups and businesses/licensed premises to show off their gardening prowess.

This year’s theme is “Local Bloomin’ Landmarks”, with a focus on “Civic Pride” and the things that make our borough unique.

Applications can be submitted online, with entry forms also available at Castle House. The closing date is Monday, 9 June. Judging takes place during June and July.

Cllr. Craig Skelding, Cabinet member for leisure, culture and heritage, said: “Our local gardening competitions are an established part of the borough’s long-standing Heart of England in Bloom entry which is now co-ordinated by Newcastle-under-Lyme BID after more than 30 years of success at the highest levels under the council’s leadership.

“They play an important part in the campaign; everyone involved helps to improve the quality of life in their local area, making Newcastle-under-Lyme an extra pleasant place to live, work, shop and visit. Gardening is also a great way to improve stress levels, lift your mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.

“Our experienced judges are once again looking forward to visiting residents and projects from all over the borough.”

The competitions are sponsored by local businesses. Donated prizes and certificates will be awarded to winners at a ceremony held at the New Vic Theatre on 27 September.
