Today we sit Caleb Allport in the 10 questions chair. His band, Look Busy are amazing so we wanted to find out all about their frontman.
- What got you into playing music?
My Nan + Grandad bought me a guitar at about the age of 8, my Dad taught me how to play ‘That’s Entertainment’ by The Jam + the old guitar noob classic ‘Smoke on Water’. That’s all I could play, for about 5 years. I was 13 when a couple of my best mates were setting up an indie outfit. I couldn’t even claim to know my way around a drum kit, so the only remaining instrument available was bass guitar, I pretended to know what I was doing and winged it ever since.
- Who was the first singer/band you saw live?
The Levellers at Vicky Hall in Hanley, September ’06. Although, technically it was the support band – ‘Three Daft Monkeys’. Probably really annoyed my Dad, repeatedly asking if they were The Levellers. Loved them from then on.
- What was the first record you bought?
‘Love Will Tear us Apart’ single by Joy Division. A far more adequate answer in comparison to the first record that I owned.
- Who do you think is the best frontman/front woman?
When it comes to fronting a band, charisma is the key. Artists such as James Brown, Kurt Cobain, Shaun Ryder, Roisin Murphy, Iggy Pop, Joe Talbot and Kate Tempest spring to mind as my personal favourites. All incredibly powerful in their own respects.
- Where was the first gig you played?
First gig in a proper venue was October 2012 at The Box in Crewe (now known as Langtry’s). Phenomenal memories.
- What is the best lyric you have ever heard?
‘The smell of p**s is so strong; it smells like decent bacon’
- Who came up with the name ‘Look busy’?
That was me, after everyone else’s approval of course. it’s so hard to come up with a name. Proper burden for a while I find. We were just chucking different ideas at each other until ‘Look Busy’ resonated and stuck. Better than ‘The Hair Blair Bunch’ probably.
- What song do you wish you had written?
‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’ by Ennio Morricone
- What venue would you like to perform?
Toss up between Albert Hall in London or Paradiso in Amsterdam. Be nice that.
- What band would you like to support?
LCD Soundsystem, The Streets or The Rapture would all be welcome offers.
