Maxwell Jeffries is a friend of the station, so we had to get him in the 10 questions chair to talk about his band, Underking.
- What got you into playing music?
That’s a very difficult question to pinpoint actually! I suppose it was through listening to as much music as I could get my hands on and my Dad taking me to lots of gigs when I was younger. Seeing lots of the bands that I admired when I was younger was a big part in me wanting to play music I think. Looking at the bands on stage or on the backs of CD/Vinyl art and thinking: “I want to do that!”
- Who was the first singer/band you saw live?
My first proper gig was Rammstein at the NEC and I remember it blowing me away! If you’ve never heard of Rammstein, they’re a German metal band that’s know in the scene for their ridiculous stage shows with plenty of fire and theatrics! That set the standard for gigs very, very high!
- What was the first song that you bought?
The first song I bought was probably ‘Fireflies’ by Owl City or ‘In the Shadows’ by The Rasmus. These are two songs that really stick out to me from when I was younger and that I still listen to today. Something about those two bands just captures that time in my life!
- Who do you think is the best frontman/frontwoman?
The answer to this question changes all the time honestly! Sometimes its Rob Halford from Judas Priest, sometimes its Tobias Forge from Ghost or Corey Taylor from Slipknot. There’s so many people with this amazing charisma that I wish I had even a small percentage of! However, that being said, I saw Halestorm at Download 2019 and Lizzy Hale is really turning into one of the greatest frontwomen of all time. I think she has the potential to be the next Joan Jett!
- Where was the first gig you played?
The Underground with my previous band Rage Cave! We supported Silverchild, Circus Junkie Rebels and Lovesick for Mina – it went a bit haywire however with me snapping a guitar string in the second song I think but it’s a memory I’ll hold fondly for a long time in retrospect. I still have the ticket on my wall!
- What is the best lyric you have ever heard?
That’s a really difficult question to answer for all time but one that has really resonated with me since it released is this lyric from Florence and the Machine’s: ‘Sky Full of Song’.
“Grab me by my ankles, I’ve been flying for too long. I couldn’t hide from the thunder in a sky full of song.”
- How much do you practice?
At the moment, a couple of hours every day! I tend to practice the most when I’m on a good run of writing music as it inspires me to get better and play new things that I haven’t tried in other songs!
- What song do you wish you had written?
This would definitely have to be either ‘Tornado of Souls’ by Megadeth or ‘Electric Eye’ by Judas Priest. Both of these songs are stone-cold classics and some of the best songs ever put tot tape!
- What venue would you like to perform?
Red Rocks Amphitheatre for sure! The venue is just so beautiful and I can imagine playing there is such a privilege. Not only because it’s a big, outdoor venue but the surroundings are amazing!
- What band would you like to support?
I’d love to support any of my heroes to be honest! Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Metallica… These bands are all such legends that it would be an honour to be on a stage with any of them. I think I would probably settle on Ghost though if I was pressured for an answer! They’ve been my favourite band for years now and after seeing them so many times, I think touring with them must be a lot of fun!
Underking music is also available everywhere else you get your music!
