ARTISAN TREATS WITH DOUBLE WHAMMY MARKET EVENT
Newcastle is set to host a double whammy of markets next month as a Continental Street Market and the local Farmers’ Market will both be in town.
From 15 to 18 July shoppers will be able to buy local, artisan food and flavours from other cultures in the same space. There will also be a chance to buy individual craftwork pieces.
Cllr. Stephen Sweeney, the Borough Council’s Cabinet member for finance and efficiency, said: “I am really delighted that we are able to bring the Continental Street Market to town once again and also for it to sit so well alongside our local Farmers’ Market.
“We were unsure about whether we would be able to go ahead with these markets this year, due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown. But, we have seen Newcastle and our other towns and high streets reopen safely over the last few weeks and felt it is safe to go ahead, observing COVID Secure measures, of course.
“The Continental Street Market will have a splendid choice of delicious hot and cold food as well as speciality take-away delicacies to be enjoyed at home. A perfect pick-me-up for Newcastle’s residents and shoppers after the scarcity of ingredients and choice during lockdown.
“I really hope that everyone support the traders who have agreed to bring their fare here for us, especially at this time.”
The diverse food on offer will include Asian flavours such as Thai noodles, Gyros (kebab-style delicacies), Baklava, rich freshly-ground coffee, Mediterranean olives and a variety of cheeses.
The markets will be situated by the Guildhall and will be open between 10am and 6pm each day. For safety reasons a road closure will be in place for the duration of the market.
