Simon’s an ‘everyday hero’ – by covering 625 miles whilst shielding in lock-down
Simon Lester, a 36-year-old dad of two, is going the extra mile to help friends, family and anyone affected by mental health issues – by covering 625 miles this month.
Simon has vowed to cross-train and/or cycle every day for the next month to raise £500 for local mental health charity North Staffs Mind.
The charity supports adults, children and young people through counselling and other services including The Maccas Project, Speak Up Space, Adult Housing Support, support groups, outreach in schools and mental health training, reaching over 8,000 people each year.
Simon was inspired to undertake the challenge after realising that he was beginning to have problems with his own mental health, specifically anxiety. He put this down to the pressures of everyday modern life and when Simon suffered the loss of a close friend in 2017, he hit an all-time low and he was unable to even face work.
Simon, who lives in Biddulph, said, “I was only able to return to work because of the support of my friends and family and through seeing a counsellor. Sadly, not everyone has access to the support I had and that’s where North Staffs Mind come in. To help people in dark places when they need it.”
Simon began his challenge on 2nd June and will continue until the end of the month to reach his goal, coming up with the idea after registering for online virtual cross-training events and triathlons but then picking up a knee injury. So, determined and inspired by a friend who is a personal trainer, he came up with a new way to complete a challenge on his cross trainer and exercise bike and a new goal of 625 miles!
Simon has already raised 60% of this fundraising target and hopes to smash that and raise even more. He’s made a fantastic start and completed 362 miles at home, making it a family affair.
“I want to say a massive thank you to my family and wife for putting up with me doing this challenge. My daughter who’s only 3 loves it too – she often sits on my shoulders whilst I’m completing my miles on the exercise bike.”
