Review - The Funhouse Comedy Club Stoke - 6th September

07 Sep 2012

The Funhouse Comedy club at the George Hotel in Burslem is a brilliant opportunity to see comedy on your doorstep.  At just £7 a ticket for 3 comedians and a compere you’re getting a comedic bargain.  Last nights gig was the return after a summer break.  Alan Donegan our compere takes the stage first and truly you get to see you get to see how The Funhouse Comedy club is suited for all the family.  You get warmed up in true package holiday hotel entertainment style.  Every member of the crowd is involved in the “banter.”  With outdated jokes such as references to Smash Hits and more topical jokes; Alan is a compere with no compare.

The First comedian to take the stage is Paul Kerensa.  Immediately you are greeted with a cheery and relaxed comedian, who provides just that in his set.

After a short break and more from our compere, the second comedian to take the stage is Dan Bland.  With a deadpan delivery on some excellent material the audience were in hysterics.  His set is clever and confidently delivered.  When Dan begins a joke I often thought I knew where it was going but he makes some unpredictable turns and will surprise you.  He keeps the same unfaltering expression throughout his set whether telling jokes about running over registered organ donors or using shopping bags as an extended metaphor for relationships.

Another break and the opportunity to win £50 by raffle and play your cards right, shortly followed by the final act; Andrew Bird.  Andrew Bird could have just walked off stage from Live At The Apollo; his comedy is Russell Howardesque.  It was a set I could relate to about growing up in a village where everyone knows everyone and consequently funny stories that occur in this dynamic.  The set could have been ruined by the loud conversation held by 2 members of the audience, but the rest were unfaltering in their concentration.  Andrew bravely and hilariously addressed the rude members and they finally stopped.

I would recommend this night to anyone. Next month’s will be a triumph; Martin Mor is a brilliant comedian. The Funhouse Comedy club; what else are you doing on a Thursday?
