'The God Particle' finally unearthed!

06 Jul 2012

As you may of already heard, yesterday saw the ushering in of a new age in the scientific commuinity after 40 years of extensive research and over 10 billions dollars worth of investment, the Higgs Boson Sub atomic particle was finally brought to life at Cern Research Centre in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Higgs boson particle is a huge part of the 'Standard Model' that physicists need to explain all the particles, forces and interactions making up the universe and was first hyposthesised back in 1962 by Peter Higgs.

Scientists now believe that this could be the start of answering questions that would lead us to ascertain the origins of the universe and develop new technologies.

One of the great aims of modern physics has been to generate these Higgs particles. To create the right conditions for their study, huge accelerators such as the Tevatron in Illinois and the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva were built involving thousands of physicists and tens of thousands of engineers over decades, with funding from coming from all over the world

The Higgs particle is the first truly new particle that mankind has conceived – and now discovered – for millennia.

'In the pursuit of seemingly infinite questions, there can only be more understanding'. That was the sentiment of physicist Nickolas Solomey on Wednesday after the European Center for Nuclear Research.

What does this mean, find out on this week's Tech Team Show

On this week’s Tech Team Show - You may ask what does this mean ? well I spoke with Dr Kristian Harder who is from the Particle Physics Department at the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, he is one of a team of scientists who analyses the data that comes from the Hadron Collider operated by CERN is Switzerland, and he explains to me what this means and what the future holds for the scientific community.

Listen this Sunday 8th July 6-7pm or if you cant make the show listen again at http://www.mixcloud.com/6TownsRadioTechTeam/
