Underground Mobile Phone Coverage

The complete London underground network is set to be mobile and broadband connectivity enabled it has emerged. The move, that will also include tube stations, will be led by French telecoms firm Alcatel-Lucent.

The scheme is a step up from plans constructed earlier this year, preparing the installation of Wi-Fi access by the commencement of the London Olympics.

The implementation of the best broadband and mobile technology possible underground is a priority now.

Ben Verwaayen, chief executive of Alcatel-Lucent thus said: “phase one is that you can communicate
under circumstances where today you can’t.

You can’t use your iPad today everywhere in the London Underground. You should, so that’s what
we’re doing. We help to make sure that the coverage is there. You sit there in the train and you want
to work in the train. That’s what we’re doing”.

In addition to mobile and broadband technology, specialist cutting-edge technology will be provided for commuters to help them travel through London. This will be similar to specific features at particular bus stops, which allows commuters to check when buses will be arriving through text or scanning their smartphone on the code printed on the stop.

“We’re going to allow you to sit in the train and think, if I make this connection where could I go? So you make a personal travel plan. That’s the next phase.”

The roll-out has been predicted by Alcatel-Lucent to generate £1.1m for the British economy, through workers having the ability to effectively make phone calls and check emails while travelling underground.

Plans are forthcoming; however their cost and timing are yet to be disclosed.
