Freshly graduated from Cambridge after a lifetime of boarding schools, Vivie Warren envisions herself a pragmatic and open-minded twentieth century woman. She finally gets to know her entrepreneurial mother, Kitty when she visits from abroad for the first time in years, only to discover the shocking secret of how her expensive education was funded by her mother’s earnings.
Written in 1893, ‘Mrs Warren’s Profession’ was originally banned by the censors for its subject matter and the hypocrisies it exposed. Bernard Shaw’s ultimate test of a mother-daughter relationship deftly depicts the universal conflict between the generations and at the same time, is a scathing critique of the restrictions placed upon women in Victorian society – one that continues to be fresh and relevant in today’s world, taking a contemporary lens to centuries- old questions of sexuality and empowerment.
Sensibilities clash in this classic, sophisticated, character-driven comedy/drama about the business of pleasure, the economics of necessity, and the ties that bind…or don’t.
