Report: Port Vale 0 Newport County 0
Vale were forced to share the points in a drab affair at Vale Park against Newport County, with neither side able to make the breakthrough as the game finished all square at nil-nil.
Vale certainly put the effort in, but there was a distinct lack of quality on show and because of it all, Vale are very much in a relegation battle, still looking for their first win in 2018.
There is no denying that Vale had the better of the opening forty five minutes, yet it could hardly be described as an entertaining first half.
Vale’s work-rate was in evidence, though there was very little finesse on show and it became quite frustrating from a supporters’ point of view.
The visitors hardly contributed to the entertainment factor, though they could have taken the lead in the 14th minute, had Padraig Amond done better with a close range header, which went straight into Ryan Boot’s grateful arms.
Chances were few and far between at either end, but Vale midfielder Luke Hannant went close with an effort that was deflected for a corner midway through the first half.
Vale had some defending to do after t he half time interval with the visitors looking well on top, with Vale floundering a little.
Vale rallied somewhat, but there was still no fluidity to their play and they were unable to put the visitors under any sustained pressure, despite showing occasional glimpses,
The frustration amongst the fans grew as the game went on, with results elsewhere going against the Vale – and the fans were well aware of that.
