Match Report: Notts County v Port Vale
Vale’s recent unbeaten run came to an end at Meadow Lane despite looking good value for at least a point, when Jon Stead scored the only goal of the game from the spot in the 86th minute.
Vale had matched the home side up to that point, but were forced to return along the A50 empty-handed after the referee awarded the home side a penalty after Stead and Marcus Harness clashed inside the box.
In a goalless first half, Vale did little from an offensive point of view to hurt the home side, but fully deserved to go in level at half time.
They had Ryan Boot to thank for the clean sheet, however, after the Vale goalkeeper made two stand-out saves to keep out the home side.
The first one, in the 32nd minute, was a superb one-handed save to deny Jonathan Forte, who got a touch to a free kick from former Valiant Dan Jones.
Four minutes later Boot was at it again, making a point blank save to keep out a diving header from County midfielder Ryan Yates.
Vale made a substitution at the beginning of the second half with the introduction of Tyrone Barnett, who came on to replace Cristian Montano in a tactical change.
A strong start to the half from Neil Aspin’s side saw the home side pegged deep inside their own half by a determined Vale side.
The second half saw an entertaining end to end forty-five minutes, but the home side were given an opportunity to break the deadlock four minutes from time when they were awarded a penalty kick.
Marcus Harness was penalised for a foul on Jonathan Stead and the referee didn’t hesitate to award the penalty and Stead gratefully slammed the ball home from the spot.
