Match Report: Forest Green Rovers 1 Port Vale 0

Vale lost for the second time in six days when a debut goal from Ruben Reid was the difference as bottom side Forest Green Rovers did enough to see off Neil Aspin’s side.

Rovers turned the form table on its head to beat the Vale, earning their first points in seven games after six straight defeats to pull Vale right back down to earth following a successful Christmas period.

In a disappointing opening forty-five minutes, neither side did anything to suggest they were about to break the deadlock, despite Neil Aspin’s side looking marginally the better of the two.

Aspin will not have been happy with his side’s display, however, and will now doubt have demanded more from hi players during the half time interval.

The Vale boss made a change at the start of the second half when Ben Whitfield, who had earlier picked up a knock, was replaced by winger Cristian Montano.

Things hardly improved early in the early stages of the second half with the home side beginning to pile on the pressure, believing they could overcome the visitors.

On the half hour that belief came to fruition when they deservedly got their noses in front when debutant Ruben Reid slammed the ball into the top corner of the net.

Neil Aspin responded by making a second substitution and a change of tactics with Anthony Kay making way for Tyrone Barnett, who went up front to partner Tom Pope.

Things did improve for the Vale and in a last throw of the dice, Dior Angus got his first taste of football at League Two level when he came off the bench for his Football League debut.

Vale still couldn’t produce the quality required to get something from the game and returned home empty handed for the second time since the New Year.
