Vale v Shrewsbury – Checkatrade Trophy
Neil Aspin’s side must put the disappointment of a late equaliser for Yeovil late on in Saturday’s FA Cup tie behind them as they go into a Checkatrade Trophy tie tonight against a Shrewsbury Town outfit who are riding high in League One.
The Shrews are enjoying a successful season and are currently sitting in second place, two points adrift of first placed Wigan Athletic and look to have a great chance of finishing the season in a similar position.
Recent fixtures between Vale and ‘Salop’ have been intense affairs, but even though their will be similar rivalry this evening the game probably won’t have the same passion, it is still an important fixture.
There is a long way to go of course, but this competition offers a more realistic opportunity to go all the way to the final, and given that Vale have been there on two previous occasions, they won’t need telling of the rewards that go with that success.
The competition may have changes it’s name since the days of Vale’s triumphs and the format may not be the same, but the goal is just the same and should it be achieved, will be just as important.
On saying that, Aspin will no doubt make several changes once again, as he looks to make sure that some of his players are fresh for the challenge when Vale resume League Two action this weekend against Cambridge United.
Regardless of what could be achieved in the Checkatrade Trophy, the league is and has to be, the manager’s priority and that will surely be reflected in his team selection.
