Match Report Colchester United 1 – 1 Port Vale

Vale came from behind to earn what many will have felt an unlikely point considering the respective league positions and the fact Colchester were second in the form table before kick-off.

With three rather tough fixtures coming up, against fourth placed Coventry City, leaders Luton Town followed by a trip to Notts County in second spot, things didn’t look to good when the home side got their noses in front.

Sammie Szmodics put the home side in front in the 31st minute when he latched onto a ball over the Vale defence to slide the ball under Vale ’keeper Ryan Boot.

The home side almost doubled their lead just four minutes later, but Boot raced off his line to get a touch on Drey Wright’s shot to take it just wide of the target.

Vale went in at the break still believing they could get something from the game, despite being quiet for much of the first half after a bright start from the visitors.

Vale boss Neil Aspin decided to make a change at the beginning of the second half with the introduction of Tyrone Barnett for Marcus Harness.

Vale began to play once again and were looking marginally the better of the two sides and were level in the 75th minutes when Marcus Harness put the ball in the net.

Barnett won the ball and hit a pass to Tyler Denton down the Vale left. Denton put the ball over into the box and Harness was on hand to head home the equaliser.

Vale were forced to stave off a determined home side who were looking to push themselves back into the play-off places, but Vale were having none of it and return home from the Weston Homes Community Stadium with another precious away point.
