MATCH REPORT: Port Vale v Crewe Alex

REPORT: Vale 4 Crewe Alex 2

Vale saw off near neighbours Crewe Alexandra in the Checkatrade Trophy last night to ensure their passage to the next stages of the competition.

It was Vale’s fifth win in the seven games since Neil Aspin took charge and gives supporters even more reasons that there are genuine reasons to believe that the club is on track for a full stage revival.

Needing to win to make one hundred percent certain of progressing, Vale opened in style, hitting two goals in the opening ten minutes of the game.

Chris Regis, a 20-year-old former Colchester United midfielder who joined the Valiants yesterday hit the opening goal on his debut within four minutes of the kick-off.

Back from injury, Anton Forrester added Vale’s second, receiving the ball with his back to goal before turning and bending the ball past Crewe ‘keeper Ben Garratt.

Crewe’s 18-year-old striker Lewis Reilly, making his full debut, pulled a goal back for the visitors on the half hour to give the Alex hope of getting back into the game.

Vale restored their two-goal cushion through Billy Reeves got on the end of a cross from Adam Yates to net with a glancing header on 65 minutes.

Reilly again pulled one back for the visitors when he managed to beat Ryan Boot for a second time in the 70th minute, but in the 90th minute Cristian Montano shoed the Crewe defence a clean pair of heels, racing through to hit Vale’s fourth goal.
