“The biggest party of the summer” rolls into Brooklyn this weekend and it looks like it could be one of the most hyped WWE events of the year.
Brock Lesnar defends his Universal Championship in a blockbuster fatal-four-way main event match against Braun Strowman, Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe with the added stipulation that if Lesnar loses then he walks away from WWE.
Jinder Mahal also defends his WWE Championship against The King of Strong Style Shinsuke Nakamura whilst all other WWE Championship are on the line, except The Intercontinental Championship which as of writing The Miz is still yet to be scheduled in a sanctioned match on Sunday night.
SummerSlam has a stacked NXT Brooklyn card to follow, so hopefully, the main roster will follow through on the buildup that has had fans hooked for the past few months.
As ever, The Brass Ring wrestling team are here to share all their predictions ahead of the event and this months panel includes Taylor Hopwood, Jake Waring, Andy Arthurs, Emellio Savvas, Joseph Steerment, Chris Rossington, Vickie Hopwood, Steven Dimelow, Phillipa Hopwood, Adam Nakhuda, Andrew Parker, Chris Wilson and Callum Hopkin.
Phillipa, Taylor, Emellio, Jake – Rusev
Chris, Andy, Wilson, Adam, Vickie, Andrew – Randy Orton
Thoughts By Taylor: It seems that Randy Orton has finally dropped out of the title picture over the past few weeks and now he finds himself heading into a mid-card match with Rusev at this year’s SummerSlam. Obviously, Orton’s SummerSlam appearance can’t be any worse than his match against Brock Lesnar at last years event where Orton was legitimately busted open and bled out all over the canvas when he was beaten down by The Beast. This year it should be a straight forward match for Randy, but given that Rusev has just been beaten in his feud against Cena and Orton is in freefall after losing his title to Jinder Mahal, this one could go either way, but you would hope Rusev would get the rub here.
Phillipa, Chris, Taylor, Emellio, Adam, Andrew – Natalya
Wilson, Vickie, Jake, Andy – Naomi
Thoughts by Jake: This is a fascinating contest between two women, involving three women. The clever angle is that we see a great match in which Natalya focuses on the knee to set up the sharpshooter, aiming for a title which she surely deserves. Naomi also deserves her moment in the ppv sun as the champ, having won the strap at Wrestlemania in a rushed scrap and had little else since. The conclusion is irrelevant as Carmella cashes in the briefcase as has been teased in recent weeks and walks out of Summerslam with the title. This is far too obvious though, and with Corbin blowing his briefcase this week, surely we can’t see another deployed this quickly. Naomi retains.
Phillipa, Taylor, Chris, Emellio, Adam, Andrew, Andy, Jake- Akira Tozawa
Wilson, Vickie – Neville
Thoughts by Callum: Personally I think Akira Tozawa will win as he’s just become the new Cruiserweight Champion this past week on Monday Night Raw and it would be a very silly decision to change the Champion six days after a new one was crowned. I think this is just the beginning of the Titus Brand and they’re using Tozawa to launch the bigger version of the this, also Neville had a good run as champion I believe he’s the longest-reigning since the title returned to WWE TV last year and I believe he will be moving out of the division on to the main roster as he’s talented and skilled enough to be on Raw itself.
Phillipa, Chris, Taylor, Wilson, Adam, Andrew, Vickie, Jake, Andrew – Big Cass
Emellio – Big Show
Thoughts By Andy: We bought this shark cage and we will bloody well use it as often as we can…” – Vince McMahon, probably. Summerslam’s biggest match of the night pits Big Show versus Big Cass in a Goliath of a match, that could reach heights… I’ll stop. This is a weird one, as for some, a match with two large blokes with Big in the name, might mean a passing of the torch. Instead, we have a hanging G above the ring, Enzo Amore to be exact, placed above to prevent any shenanigans. Consider this a reason to expect said shenanigans. Big Cass should take the match, but the big question is… how.
Phillipa, Taylor, Chris, Emellio, Wilson, Adam, Andrew, Vickie, Jake, Andy – The New Day
Thoughts by Phillipa: Who else is bored of The Usos up against The New Day when BreeZango and The Hype Bros are just waiting in the wings for a chance? We’ve seen this feud with The New Day as heel and Usos and faces and this time the teams have switched places and we are being forced to see it again. It doesn’t seem likely that The Usos will reclaim their Championships on Sunday night, which means that this will hopefully be the last time the WWE Universe has to see these two teams collide, at least for a few months anyway.
Phillipa, Emellio, Wilson, Adam, Vickie, Andrew, Jake – Seth Rollins And Dean Ambrose
Taylor, Chris, Andy – Cesaro and Sheamus
Thoughts by Vickie: WWE has done the unthinkable, they’ve made AmbRollins a thing and on Sunday night they could become Tag Team Champions, not only that, but Dean Ambrose would become a Grand Slam Champion in WWE, the only member of The Shield to have been able to do so, finally one-upping his former brothers. How likely is it that this is all a ploy and Ambrose will turn on Rollins as a means to finally extract the revenge he deserves for the way he treated him when The Shield split more than three years ago. Anything can happen on Sunday night, as much as I love Ambrose and Rollins together, this storyline has to feed into the heel turn that Ambrose fans have been waiting almost his entire career for. Come on WWE. Give it to us.
Phillipa, Taylor, Emellio, Adam, Vickie, Andrew, Andy – Baron Corbin
Chris, Wilson, Jake – John Cena
Thoughts by Steven: John Cena and Baron Corbin have been feuding over the last couple weeks. It started after Corbin attacked Cena and Shinsuke Nakamura after their match on SmackDown to decide number one contender for the WWE title. As a big Cena fan, I even felt the feud was a little rushed and simply not that interesting, with not much to hold on, but the home coming episode of SmackDown for SummerSlam changed that as the last ten minutes switched up the feud quite a bit. Corbin stopped Cena pinning the WWE Champion which could set up a future title shot and Cena cost Corbin the WWE Championship after he cashed in his Money in the Bank contract. I’ve got a feeling Cena’s impressive record at SummerSlam could come to an end at the hands of Corbin, who could really do with a win over the 16-time Champion on Sunday night.
Phillipa, Emellio, Wilson, Adam, Vickie, Andrew, Jake, Andrew – Alexa Bliss
Chris – Sasha Banks
Thoughts by Emellio: Were we not talking about this match last month? I feel like I’ve already seen this… There are amazing competitors in the women’s division now so why stick with the same match every PPV? The last few months have been quite repetitive with Alexa Vs. Bayley or Alexa Vs. Sasha. Unless they’re building up to a women’s tag match with Team Rude Vs. Sasha and Bayley, I see no point in continuing with the storyline. There’s no doubt that this will be a good match, just as any match with either Alexa or Sasha… As I said last month I have no doubt that Alexa will win the match and continue onto another month of being The WWE Goddess. You never know something interesting may happen in the match and Sasha’s weave may actually fall off…
The Miz, Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas Vs. Jason Jordan, Matt and Jeff Hardy
Phillipa, Vickie, Andrew, Andy – Jordan and The Hardys
Chris, Emellio, Wilson – Miztourage
Thoughts by Vickie: The Miztourage have joined the SummerSlam card late this year and it seems that since The Revival are unable to be cleared for action against The Hardy Boyz, WWE has thrown together a last minute six-man Tag match that the WWE Universe already saw this week on Monday Night Raw. This isn’t a match that will do any show stealing, it is a time filler and potentially could set up a match between Jason Jordan and The Miz for the Intercontinental Championship in the near future, but it seems that this weekend The Miz is the only Champion in WWE that doesn’t have to defend his title, and he says General Manager Kurt Angle is against him? It seems he’s let him off lightly.
Phillipa, Emellio, Vickie, Jake – AJ Styles
Taylor, Chris, Andrew- Kevin Owens
Thoughts by Phillipa: AJ Styles shocked the world when he managed to defeat Kevin Owens for the United States Championship at the Madison Square Garden Live Event a number of weeks ago and has managed to hold onto the title ever since. He goes into this match on Sunday night knowing that Shane McMahon is a loose cannon as a referee and given the fact that he hit him with a Pele Kick a few weeks ago, he can’t be sure that Shane won’t turn on him if he needs to. The storyline seems to be focusing on the problems between Kevin and Shane and could see the duo go one-on-one in the near future, which means AJ would have to retain the Championship.
Phillipa, Taylor, Chris, Emellio, Wilson, Adam, Vickie, Andrew, Jake, Andy – Finn Balor
Thoughts by Adam: So tomorrow night sees “The Biggest Party of the Summer,” that being SUMMERSLAM! Great matches all round the card but one match, in particular, has the most potential to steal the show, and that’s Bray Wyatt versus Finn Balor. Wyatt who is a character of mischief and mind games has been trying to get into The Demon King’s head for the past few weeks on Raw, however, Finn has managed to overcome the mind games of “The Eater of Worlds” and has stayed focused, but this past week Wyatt got into this head when he covered him in BLOOD, Balor followed up from this attack by saying he was going to release his ‘demons’ so will The Demon King overcome The Eater of Worlds? My guess is Finn Balor will end the former leader of The Wyatt Family.
Phillipa, Taylor, Chris, Emellio, Adam, Andrew, Vickie – Shinsuke Nakamura
Wilson, Andy, Jake – Jinder
Thoughts by Andrew: Well well well, if the whole title scene hasn’t been blown right open due to Cena and Corbin’s little briefcase tiff. With the seemingly nailed on scenario of Nakamura winning, followed by a Corbin cash in, out the window, we find ourselves in the weird position where we’re questioning whether Nakamura is going to go over Jinder Mahal. It’s a tough one, for sure! But, after careful deliberation and the demolition of my sarcasm machine, I have to conclude that Nakamura simply has to win. He is far too big of a star to not be pushing to the main title scene as a permanent fixture, and that will be incredibly hard to do if he has loses to Jinder Mahal under his belt.
Phillipa, Taylor, Chris, Wilson, Andy, Jake – Brock Lesnar
Emellio, Adam, Vickie – Braun Strowman
Joe – Roman Reigns
Andrew – Samoa Joe
Thoughts by Joe: I couldn’t decide which main event I liked more, the prospect of Shinsuke Nakamura being champion or the fatal-four-way. Had to hand it to the Universal title match a four contender title match featuring some of the biggest and baddest monsters in the industry today and Roman Reigns. Going off the excitement of the seven-minute long kicking Samoa Joe gave Brock Lesnar at Great Balls of Fire I want to give my prediction to him because who doesn’t want a legitimate fighting champion representing the company? No Brock, not you. Anyhow back to my point as much as I favor the Samoan Submission Machine I do think the win will go to Roman Reigns. This to me hinges on the winners of the Raw tag title match, through segments of the reluctant reunification of two-thirds of the Shield large portions of the crowd could be heard actually chanting for Roman to get there. Roman being in the unfortunate position of being the most hated man in the company Vince has to be salivating at the prospect of actually getting Reigns over. A Shield reunion would do this with all members holding titles and I don’t think even the majority of anti-reigns fans would mind him being the one with the top prize. I predict throughout the carnage, interference from Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose on Reigns behalf making a shocking return of The Shield at SummerSlam. As much as I detest the idea of Roman winning I still find the notion more favorable than Brock disappearing with the belt for another 4 months.
