WrestleMania is now in the rear view mirror and it seems that what many of WWE’s creative team thought was a good idea, in allowing a Superstar Shakeup to happen, has resulted in something of a strange pay-per-view.
Payback should be a Raw brand exclusive event but thanks to the shakeup, there are now many SmackDown superstars on the show as well as a SmackDown Championship being defended.
The build up has been lacklustre with Raw this week being seen as slightly underwhelming considering it was the go home episode, but either way, tomorrow night WWE presents Payback live from San Jose, California Raw Women’s Champion Bayley’s hometown, as she defends against Alexa Bliss.
The main event of the night sees SmackDown’s Randy Orton take on Bray Wyatt in a unique House of Horrors match as they attempt to settle their differences once and for all.
As ever, The Brass Ring’s wrestling team are here to pick the bones out of the upcoming event and this month’s panel includes Jake Waring, Daniel Standring, Steven Dimelow, Chris Rossington, Phillipa Hopwood, Andrew Parker, Andy Arthurs and Vickie Hopwood.
Phillipa, Andrew, Chris, Dan – Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson
Jake, Joe, Andy, Vickie, Steven – Enzo And Cass
Thoughts by Andrew – What the hell do you do with Enzo and Cass? From a business point of view, they’re almost perfect. Unique look, full of catch-phrases, great audience participation, shift a lot of merchandise. From a wrestling point of view, however, they really have been restricted. There is talent locked away in there, there’s no doubt about that. Just look at the kind of things they can do when paired with a good heel team and time – their fantastic Takeover match with The Revival comes to mind. Hopefully, if they are given time with The Club, they can showcase that. The Club will definitely be wanting to put on a great match, in order to keep their momentum going after their title run. I’d expect The Club to go over, but, with all fingers and toes crossed, Enzo and Cass to come out of the match looking just as good.
Phillipa, Andrew, Vickie, Steven – Seth Rollins
Jake, Andy, Chris, Dan – Samoa Joe
Thoughts by Phillipa – Samoa Joe and Seth Rollins feud began the night after The Royal Rumble when Triple H decided to bring in his own destroyer to sort out Rollins. Joe went on to injure Seth to the point where it was unknown if he would be able to compete at WrestleMania. Luckily, Rollins recovered in time and managed to defeat his former mentor on the Grandest Stage of them all. This has now allowed Rollins to move on and instead focus on Samoa Joe. This rivalry is more than personal already and Rollins will be wanting to make a statement especially with the likes of Finn Balor and Dean Ambrose recently joining the Raw roster. Joe probably needs a win more, but I think Rollins will take it.
Phillipa, Andrew, Jake, Andy, Chris, Dan, Vickie, Steven – The Hardyz
Thoughts by Andrew – I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that the Hardys Vs Sheamaro might just be the match of the night. Sheamus and Cesaro have put on some absolute tag-team clinic since teaming up, whilst the Hardys’ experience in high-profile tag matches doesn’t even need to be mentioned. I don’t think anyone would be surprised at the Hardys retaining in their first PPV defence. The bigger talking point, as it has been since their return, is when, or if, Matt Hardy will get “broken”. Whilst the legal dispute over the gimmick rages on, Matt has been teasing his broken genius through mannerisms and, quite frankly, the greatest WWE promo picture of all time (just look at the match graphic, it’s impossible not to be overjoyed by it). Could Sunday be the night that Matt’s mind breaks in two? As a massive fan of the Broken gimmick, I certainly hope so.
The Hardyz to retain and perhaps Broken Matt to appear?
Phillipa, Andrew, Chris, Dan, Steven – Braun Strowman
Jake, Vickie – Roman Reigns
Thoughts by Steven – Roman and Strowman’s feud as been going on for a good few months now, with the defining moment so far seeing Roman Reigns pin Braun Strowman at Fastlane after Braun cost him the Universal Championship at The Royal Rumble. Following what was a career high win at WrestleMania over The Undertaker it seems that Braun wanted to pick up where he left off and gave Roman one hell of a beating and even flipped an ambulance. This is a hard match to choose a winner with WWE’s inability to not push Roman down the throats of the WWE Universe, but given the run that Strowman has been on over the past few weeks, if they want to build him like a beast then he has to go through Roman. It will be an interesting one, hopefully with a different ending that Fastlane. I’m going Strowman.
Phillipa, Andrew, Vickie, Steven – Austin Aries
Jake, Andy, Chris, Dan – Neville
Thoughts by Vickie – Neville has been the undisputed King of the Cruiserweights for the past few months and it seems that WWE have pulled out an absolute worldie by involving him in a storyline with Austin Aries. The former TNA legend has taken over the Cruiserweight Division and even though King Neville has reigned his division for the past few months it seems that he has an intruder in his kingdom and after their showdown at WrestleMania, this could finally be Aries chance to prove that he can dethrone the king. This is Aries best opportunity to have his own Game of Thrones and it’s likely that he will not let this latest chance pass him by.
Jake, Andrew, Andy, Dan – Bayley
Chris. Phillipa, Vickie, Steven – Alexa
Thoughts By Jake – We’re back! Wrestlemania was this month believe it or not, but it feels like this first PPV has crept up on us quietly. That could be as the superstar shake up has ruined the build up to some of the main matches. However, Bayley vs Alexa Bliss is happening, and I, for one, am really looking forward to it. It would make sense for WWE to keep the strap on Bayley leading into the feud with Sasha eventually. The way in which she has beaten Charlotte means her stock is high, and it would be a waste to strip her of the title now. I’m a massive Bliss fanboy, and I cannot wait to see the face she pulls when she loses. She really is brilliant. Bayley win.
Phillipa, Andrew, Jake, Andy, Dan, Vickie, Steven – Kevin Owens
Chris – Chris Jericho
Thoughts by Dan – The winner and still United States Champion is none other than The Face of America’ Kevin Owens. It’s no secret that Chris Jericho is now going back on tour with Fozzy and will be gone for some time. This has to have been the best feud that WWE have done in a very long time with emotion and passion from the former best friends. Personally, I think it should have ended at WrestleMania but still nice to see these guys go at it in the ring once again. It’s a personal feud that could well main event the entire show and it has the potential to steal the show as well.
Phillipa, Andrew, Jake, Andy, Chris, Dan, Vickie, Steven – Bray Wyatt
Thoughts by Andy – The McMahons Treehouse of Horror Special” or something close to that is one of the most intriguing matches on the Card, with former champ and Spoop enthusiast Bray Wyatt taking on Randy Orton for the WWE Championship. Or for no title. No one actually knows. Horror.
Consider this a continuation of the unfortunately rushed Wrestlemania match between the two, but possibly with more worms and cockroaches than just a projection.
Some are saying this could be a Final Deletion style matchup, with the previous “attempt’ flopping, hopes are high for this to be WONDERFUL!
I digress. Seeing as this is Bray’s chosen match, the match no longer for the title (maybe) and the fabled 50/50 booking?
Spoop Dogg Wyatt will take the victory.
