From the very moment audiences walk into the Regent Theatre to watch Mamma Mia the Musical, on tour and currently in our fantastic Stoke-on-Trent, they are transported immediately to the Greek Islands with a fabulous blue waves ocean cloth setting the scene. If this didn’t whet the audiences appetite enough it was plain to see the whole audience coming to live with the incredible Musical interlude tantalising us with the ABBA Music to come.
The very clever staging set the scene with ease and gave a general feeling of warmth and island life. This with accompanied by great choices of costume throughout and clever lighting helping to set the mood.
There was some incredible comedic performances throughout the production and it was heart warming to hear the audience belly laughing and snorting at the plethora of jokes and comedy. Chiquitita was one of the highlights of the evening with excellent comedy used throughout which gave nods to Morecambe and Wise at times and had the audience laughing throughout. All of the sets of friendships were portrayed with humour, empathy and passion.
The choreography during the production was energetic, disciplined and very clever. There were some exceptional vocal performances especially from Helen Hobson, playing Donna, who had the audience gasping at her vocals during The Winner Takes It All, and from Gillian Hardie, playing Rosie, and Emma Clifford, playing Tanya, during Chiquitita. There were many stand out musical numbers in the show in particular Super Trouper, Gimme Gimme Gimme and Take A Chance On Me.
The whole production was smart, disciplined, and uber professional. It had all of the audience up on there feet dancing, singing and smiling and no doubt had the audiences humming all the way home.
Mamma Mia the Musical runs at the Regent Theatre until Saturday 29th April and tickets can be purchased from www.atgtickets.com
