WWE presents what is set to be the final pay-per-view of their current era as all current members of Smackdown and Raw look set to battle together for the final time on Sunday night in Washington DC.
This past week’s historic draft means that many of these feud’s will be over after Sunday night because superstars are on separate rosters and so can not possibly continue their rivalries on separate shows. Battleground will also be the first time all three former members of The Shield have met in a Triple Threat predicament and will see the return of Roman Reigns following suspension.
As ever The 6 Towns Radio team is on hand to cover all the predictions ahead of the show and this months panel includes, Daniel Standring, Jake Waring, Vickie Hopwood, Callum McKay, Andrew Parker, Phillipa Hopwood and Dave Beeston.
The Club (AJ Styles, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows) vs John Cena, Enzo Amore and Big Cass
Phillipa, Vickie, Daniel, Jake – Cena, Enzo and Cass
Andrew, Callum – The Club
Thoughts by Andrew – Enzo and Cass are basically a cash pinata for the WWE. I don’t say that as a bad thing. They’re popular as all hell because they’ve earned it – they’ve honed their act to one that no-one could fail to like, they’re continuously improving in the ring and, Enzo in particular, are two of the best promo guys in the business. It’s incredibly nice to see them rewarded like this, being given the chance to work with amazing workers like The Club, and legit megastars in AJ Styles and John Cena. This will be one hell of a match. In the end, I see this going to The Club. They need the victory far more than the face team. That said, I would not be surprised with a family-pleasing face win either.
Natayla vs Becky Lynch
Phillipa, Vickie, Daniel, Andrew, Jake – Becky Lynch
Callum – Natayla
Thoughts by Callum – What seems to be arguably the most pointless story line currently on WWE programming could be lined up to give us a really entertaining match. We all know what Natalya is capable of, think back to when her and Charlotte faced off in NXT and you know she can deliver classics. Becky Lynch however, despite being a sought after talent in the world of women’s wrestling is probably the most lackluster of all of the ‘four horsewomen’. With this in mind I feel that in particular she has got something to prove and she has that platform Sunday. In what should be a very good match between the two the experience edge will see Natalya take the win in this on.
The New Day vs The Wyatt Family
Andrew, Callum – The Wyatt Family
Thoughts by Jake – Hot off the heels of a better-shot but not as enjoyable rip-off of ‘The Final Deletion’, The New Day face the Wyatt Family this Sunday. A few weeks ago it looked to me as though there was some half-baked plot to inexplicably split The New Day, with Xavier under the Wyatts’ spell, but this seems to have cooled since they were confronted with some lights in the woods at ‘The Compound’. I guess the prospect of selling infinite Booty-O t-shirts was irresistible. This is not a title match, and since the Wyatts have been split in the draft too, I can’t see anything but a New Day victory. Having held the belts for a record reign now, were the titles on the line I may have thought differently, and who knows, maybe the Xavier trance thing will make an appearance/some sense come Sunday night.
Rusev w/ Lana (C) vs Zack Ryder – United States Championship
Phillipa, Daniel, Andrew, Callum, Jake – Zack Ryder
Vickie – Rusev
Thoughts by Dave – So the mighty Rusev, The Bulgarian Brute is up against The Long Island Iced Z Zack Ryder, now on paper this looks like it’s an easy win fpr the current Champion his famous Accolade, but with the way Ryder has been pushed over the past few weeks with this new passion within his eyes this could be ha hard one to decide. I predict that Ryder will win and perhaps shockingly we may see his girlfriend Emma be the equaliser to combat Lana at ringside.
Charlotte and Dana Brooke vs Sasha and TBD
Vickie, Andrew – Charlotte and Dana
Phillipa, Daniel, Callum, Jake – Sasha and TBD
Thoughts by Phillipa – This match annoys me slightly, Charlotte vs Sasha could easily have been made for the Women’s Championship without having Dana in the match but once again a tag team match is given the nod over a much more prestigious title match at a pay-per-view. Charlotte hasn’t defended her title since the night after Money in the Bank and is currently in breach of WWE’s 30 day contract clause. This means the title will have to be defended on Monday night Raw otherwise Charlotte could be stripped of the title as a result. As far as this match goes, it is literally just a match to either set up the return of Nikki Bella or Paige or the debut of Bayley. Whoever it is hopefully they can help Sasha overcome the blonde duo and book herself a Women’s Championship match at SummerSlam.
Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens
Vickie, Daniel – Kevin Owens
Phillipa, Andrew, Callum – Sami Zayn
Jake – Draw
Thoughts by Daniel – The match that we have all been waiting for, the match to end it all or is it? We will have to wait and see with the two brands I see this becoming a loser leaves Raw match at some point but what a build up this match has had to the point of a shirtactually being made. Kevin vs Sami is just incredible. What more can you ask for from two of the best wrestlers in the world right now. This match will steal the show and should be high on the card I predict that Kevin will win and move on to bigger things. But it doesn’t matter who really wins here because the WWE Universe are the real winners.
The Miz w/Maryse (C) vs Darren Young w/Bob Backlund – Intercontinental Championship
Vickie, Daniel, Jake – The Miz
Phillipa, Andrew, Callum – Darren Young
Thoughts by Andrew – Would it be a stretch to call The Miz, Darren Young and Bob Backlund the three best things in the WWE at the moment? Well, yes. But it’s not a stretch to say they’re absolutely killing it at the moment. The Miz is one of the best heels going, Darren Young is showing some character and Bob… he’s Bob Backlund doing Bob Backlund things. It’s gold. But can Darren young take the gold? I think he might just do. It’s around the right time for Mix to drop the belt, and it’s great to strike whilst the iron is hot with Darren
Dean Ambrose (C) vs Seth Rollins vs Roman Reigns – Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship
Phillipa – Draw
Vickie, Andrew Callum – Dean Ambrose
Daniel, Jake – Seth Rollins
Thoughts by Vickie – The main event of Battleground sees The Dude vs The Man vs The Guy as Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns battle it out for the WWE Championship in one of the most anticipated triple threat matches in recent years. Dean Ambrose walks in to the match with the gold after becoming only the second person in history to win The Money in the Bank briefcase and cash in on the same night, pinning Seth Rollins to win his first WWE Championship. Earlier that same night (exactly two minutes earlier) Seth Rollins had pinned Roman Reigns to claim back the ‘title he never lost’ meaning that Roman Reigns was owed a rematch and now so was Seth Rollins, so obviously the only way to solve this dilemma was to give the universe what they’ve wanted since the 2nd of June 2014 and allow the former brethren to fight it out for the most prestigious title in the industry. Personally I think Ambrose should retain so that Smackdown can continue to gain credibility and Ambrose can head towards a rivalry with Bray Wyatt.
