WWE Payback is set to descend upon the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois in what could be an action packed night tonight as the show boasts the first WWE World Heavyweight Championship match for AJ Styles.
There are also many rumors surrounding the event that suggest that Finn Balor could make his debut and The Bullet Club could finally form on WWE’s stage. As ever, The Brass Ring’s team has come together to predict the outcome of all the matches. This months panel includes Andrew Parker, Phillipa Hopwood, Chris Rossington, Daniel Standring, Vickie Hopwood and Richard Healey.
Phillipa, Chris, Dan, – Ryback
Andrew, Rich – Kalisto
Thoughts by Phillipa – This match is a carbon copy of the kick off show for WrestleMania last month and given how little Kalisto has been seen on WWE TV lately it seems likely that Ryback could be set to win his first United States Championship. Kalisto has been rumored to be injured which also adds to the case for Ryback, Kalisto works better as a tag team wrestler along with Sin Cara and it seems that WWE are finally seeing this.
Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin
Phillipa, Vickie, Rich, Andrew, Dan, Chris – Baron Corbin
Thoughts by Dan: If you want to make an impact in the mid-card then you go for Dolph Ziggler and that’s what Baron Corbin did.. Since making his main roster debut at WrestleMania 32 in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, Corbin had a good start but I feel this feud just seems a little lack luster, but I know with Ziggler’s selling and Corbin’s hard hitting we might get a very entertaining match anyway. This match could well be one of the matches of the night, but the sad part if the fact that Ziggler has been relegated to the guy who puts others over now so it has been made obvious that Corbin will be the victor here.
The Vaudevillians vs. Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady. – Tag Team Tournament Final
Dan, Chris, Phillipa, Vickie, Rich – Enzo and Cass
Thoughts by Richard – I think that both number one tag team contenders have given a decent account of themselves since coming up to the main roster. I’m not sure how long The Vaudevillians gimmick can last going forward but I take nothing away from their ability. Enzo and Big Cass for me are winning this match. They’re a breath of fresh air on the roster, very very charismatic and they’re so so over. They’re my prediction to win this number one contenders match.
Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn
Rich, Chris – Sami Zayn
Thoughts by Dan: This match will be the match of the night if not match of the year, the passion that these two men have for the business is amazing and the skill is top notch. I love how they have managed to bring what was an amazing feud down in NXT up on to the main show and have given the WWE universe a match to get excited about. It will be interesting to see where they take it after Payback but I would love to see the feud get more heated and go on to SummerSlam and perhaps have a title involved. My winner is Kevin Owens but the real winner is the fans.
Andrew, Rich, Vickie, Phillipa, Chris – Dean Ambrose
Dan – Chris Jericho
Thoughts by Vickie- This match has been slowly simmering for a few weeks and was finally made official by Shane McMahon on Raw. This rivalry can actually be taken back to Survivor Series 2015 when Chris Jericho came back to team with Ambrose and Reigns to take on The Wyatt Family. Ambrose, Reigns and Jericho lost the match and Jericho seemed to blame Ambrose, even taking it as far as to push him out of the way as he left the ring. For the last few weeks Jericho has been on top of the feud leaving Ambrose lying twice following a sneak attack with a Code Breaker on one occasion and The Walls of Jericho on the announcers desk on another, but Ambrose is right at home being the underdog. This leads me to believe that Ambrose will be walking away from Sunday’s PPV with the victory, because it will be a bigger win for Ambrose when he overcomes the odds.
Rich – The Miz
Chris, Dan, Phillipa, Andrew, Vickie – Cesaro
Thoughts by Andrew – Oh my days, it is SO good to see The Miz in this position. That man is so under-rated it’s unreal. He’s one of the best on the mic, he’s got a superb character, his comedic timing is perfect, he’s good in the ring and he has the single best sunglasses removing motion in the world. Seeing him get proper screen time, an actual feud, and a shiny belt over his shoulder has made me as happy as Zack Ryder at Wrestlemania. The only thing making me happier is the attention that Cesaro has been having alongside him. The suit was a genius touch. The Bond-inspired entrance, inspired. He’s the only person on which the title would look even more swarve, and with the amount of love he rightly garners from the fans, it’s his time to have a run with the belt.
Charlotte (c) V Natalya – WWE Women’s Championship
Chris, Phillipa, Rich – Natalya
Thoughts by Phil: Natalya could be the best competition that Charlotte has had as champion and given that the duo had a fantastic match at Roadblock a few months ago, this one should be something special. Finally Nattie has found an equalizer to Ric Flair’s interference and it could be the best chance for Charlotte to drop the title. I think WWE need to give Natalya a chance with the championship, she deserves it. Charlotte’s run needs to come to an end.
Chris, Vickie, Rich, Andrew – Roman Reigns
Dan, Phillipa – AJ Styles
Thoughts by Chris: Roman Reigns vs AJ Styles This all set alight after Styles triumphantly won the fatal four way match on the Raw after Wrestlemania, which in my opinion was the highlight of the show. Since then it’s been a roller-coaster for Styles being pushed into the main event so soon after debuting at the Royal Rumble, for me it made no sense losing to Jericho at Mania ! Since Raw plus the Raw following we’ve now been introduced to Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson which back in New Japan alongside Styles formed the notorious Bullet Club, now the question looms as to whether WWE will put these together and form a Balor club with the addition on Finn Balor, that remains to be seen, however at Payback The Guy gets a chance to prove his doubters wrong and hopefully put on an amazing match with Styles for the WWE World Heavyweight Title. For me Reigns isn’t the top guy and shouldn’t be champion however is it to soon to put the strap on the veteran AJ Styles ? This is going to be quite a contest, my hope is that Styles would take the title but I don’t see the point in putting the title on Reigns to then take it off him so soon after WrestleMania. Question is now will Gallows and Anderson help Styles in the match or will they help Reigns ?
Payback is live on Sunday night from midnight on Sky Box Office and on the WWE Network…
