WWE Extreme Rules comes live from The Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey tonight and it boasts the first ever Asylum match as Dean Ambrose and Chris Jericho collide inside the steal as well as the WWE World Heavyweight Championship showdown between AJ Styles and current champion Roman Reigns.
As ever, The 6 Towns Radio team has once again shared their predictions, this months group includes Chris Rossington, Daniel Standring, Phillipa Hopwood Kevin Sanders, Rich Healey, Andrew Parker and Vickie Hopwood.
Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin – No Disqualification Match
Dan, Richard – Dolph Ziggler
Thoughts By Kevin: Whether you like him or not, Corbin is one of the best heels in the WWE right now. He doesn’t do anything flashy except for his finisher, he has a slow style that makes you want to see the baby-face back on top, and he comes across as a complete and utter asshole. Like, so confident. In times when heels are popping out high flying moves for fun, Baron Corbin is keeping it really simple and really unlikable. Whether he will become a huge star is yet to be seen in an era that demands so much, but he has a lot of potential. On the other hand, Ziggler is a solid hand, who always has solid matches, but WWE seem to be in no hurry to strap a rocket to his back. My prediction is that Corbin takes this one and continues his momentum closer to the top of the card.
Kalisto (C) vs. Rusev – United States Championship
Vickie, Dan, Andrew, Kevin, Richard, Phillipa – Rusev
Chris – Kalisto
Thoughts By Phillipa – This is a match that has come from out of nowhere. Ryback leaving WWE left a gap in the United States title chase and Rusev won the subsequent battle royal and so the match was made. Kalisto has done very little with the US title over the past few months and it seems that going forward WWE would have more opportunities for it with it around Rusev’s waist. The Bulgarian Brute will definitely bring the fight to the high flyer, but I can’t see this being a match of the night candidate.
Charlotte (C) vs. Natalya – Submission Match for the WWE Womens Championship
Vickie, Dan, Kevin, Andy, Richard, Chris – Charlotte
Thoughts by Phillipa – A women’s submission match! My god I can’t actually wait for this, a match that has a personal story behind it and has been building for months, there is also the added option of bringing Paige into the mix as well. The match will not end until either Charlotte or Natalya tap to their opponents submission finishers, and Ric Flair is banned from ringside. This could be the perfect opportunity for Natalya to finally take the title that she has always been destined to hold. But this is Charlotte’s record eleventh consecutive pay-per-view appearance so there is no telling which way this one will go.
The New Day vs. The Vaudevillians – Tag Team Championship Match
Vickie, Andy, Kevin, Dan, Richard, Chris, Phillipa – The New Day
Thoughts by Andrew – Hand on heart, I honestly thought the Vaudevillians would flounder on the main roster. I thought their gimmick would fall flat, that they would fail to look like legitimate threats, and they’d be Acension-ed within a few months. Therefore, I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am that they are being showcased. They’ve been at least equal to New Day, often ended segments completely on top, and have even been standing up to them in the microphone department. All four guys involved in this title match are amazing workers and will put on one hell of a match, that much is for sure. As for the victors – whilst I’ve been singing the praises of the Vaudevillians, I really don’t think that the New Day should drop those titles yet. By being on one of the hottest acts the WWE have seen in a long time, they’re being elevated to strange new heights. The New Day themselves don’t need those titles, but the titles need the New Day.
Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho – Asylum Match
Richard, Chris – Chris Jericho
Thoughts By Andrew – Whilst this kind of match is not new to the world of wrestling (Raven’s Clockwork Orange House of Fun matches in TNA spring to mind), it is nice to see WWE try something new and in keeping with Ambrose’s character. It’s right up Ambrose’s alley to get pissed off and get all CZW up in Jericho’s grill. We may even be witnessing the birth of a new signature match for a major star, much like Undertaker and Buried Alive matches. If that is indeed the plan, I can’t see any way Ambrose is losing this one (totally ignoring the fact that Undertaker never won a Buried Alive match). Ambrose wins, we all get a great match, crazy spots happen, and Ambrose gurns his way onto his next feud.
The Miz (C) vs. Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro vs. Sami Zayn. – Fatal Four-way match for the Intercontinental Championship
Andy, Richard – The Miz
Kevin, Phillipa, Chris – Sami Zayn
Thoughts by Daniel Standring – This fatal 4 way could be considered a waste of time. Many fans expected two separate matches, Owens vs Zayn and Cersaro vs The Miz. As much as I’m sure all four men will be out to steal the show, is it a match we care about …. perhaps not. The match I wanted was Owens vs Zayn in a No Disqualification or Extreme Rules Match, I feel the winner should be Owens, but that’s just my opinion. Owens needs a bigger stage now so I feel the winner may be Cesaro But this is WWE so who knows.
The Usos vs. Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows – Texas Tornado Tag Match
Richard – The Usos
Thoughts By Andrew – I’m still having trouble processing this. If you had told me this time last year that Nakamura, Styles, Anderson and Gallows would all be in the WWE, I’d force your fantasy booking somewhere where the rising sun don’t shine. But here we are, presented with all four of them making waves in the WWE, and part of that is this tornado tag against the Usos. Say what you want about the Usos, but when was the last time they didn’t pull it out the bag at a PPV? They seriously have put on some incredible matches at PPV level, such as the 2 out of 3 falls against the Wyatts, or the Ladder match which also gave us the Salina Del Sol off the ladder. They will pull it all out the bag, but ultimately, The Club has to go over. They need to be a force, they have to be a threat, they have to be built up, and taking out the Usos is a grand way to do so.
Vickie, Dan, Andy, Kevin, Richard, Chris, Phillipa – Roman Reigns
Thoughts by Richard – Will he join Anderson and Gallows? I suppose tonight we find out! AJ Styles in the wwe has been hugely exciting! The matched he’s had with Chris Jericho were outstanding. Now the question is, can he drag another solid match out of Roman (yawn) Reigns?? And this time there’s weapons involved!! I for one can’t wait to find out! It’s a Roman (yawn) Reigns victory for me in afraid (sad face)
