The 29th annual Royal Rumble comes to us live from the Amway Center in Orlando Florida on Sunday night with what is expected to be a history making, record setting match.
Every WWE Championship is on the line at the event which also boasts the 30-man over the top rope battle Royal which for the first time ever is for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and the Intercontinental Championship will be defended in a Last Man Standing Match for the first time.
As ever the 6 Towns Radio team are here to provide their predictions, this months team consists of the Brass Ring’s Phillipa and Vickie Hopwood, Daniel Standring, Callum McKay, Andrew Parker, Kevin Sanders, Richard Healey, Dan Townley and Chris Rossington.
Kick off show – Fatal Four Way for a place in the Royal Rumble
Phillipa – Damien Sandow and Darren Young
Callum, Chris, Dan, Rich, Andrew, Kevin, Daniel, Vickie – The Dudley Boys
Thoughts by Kevin – Interesting, seemingly thrown together match, but there is a lot of talent involved. The winner of this match comes down to who is more likely to be in the Rumble. Darren Young and, unfortunately, Damien Sandow do not really seem to have the machine behind them at the moment. The Ascension are essentially jobbing out left right and centre and currently do not have that feel of legitimacy about them. So that leaves the other two teams. Jack Swagger has been rebuilt a little bit recently and has had a few good matches, and this could well be Mark Henry’s last Rumble. And we know WWE like having big men in the Rumble. But my shout would have to go to the Dudley Boys. With their feud with The Wyatt Family seemingly never ending, they seem the most likely candidates to win. And although a fair bit of their steam has come off them since their debut, in all likelihood, they are still most likely out of everybody in this match to pop the crowd on their entrance (although I’m still convinced Sandow would get a lot of noise). I give this one to the Dudley Boys.
Charlotte vs Becky Lynch – Divas Championship
Andrew, Chris, Kevin – Charlotte
Thoughts by Rich – Finally!! We have a divas match on a big stage that we can actually look forward to! Mainly because it doesn’t contain any awful divas like The Bellas, Alicia Fox, Tamina, Eva Marie and the useless Funcadactyls! Although run ins and interference is inevitable! If left alone, these two could have a fantastic match that could be remembered for years to come. Both of these girls deserve their spot in this match and I’d love to see Becky Lynch take her first divas championship, in fact I’m going to stick my neck on the line here and say she will.
Phillipa, Rich, Callum, Andrew, Dan – Kalisto
Chris, Vickie, Daniel, Kevin- Del Rio
Thoughts by Andrew – It’s been a weird few weeks in the US Title scene. A surprise title switch on RAW, followed by an even more surprising switch on Smackdown, there would have been very few people who would have predicted Kalisto and Del Rio hot-potatoing the title. It does beg the question though, who wins on Sunday? Hopefully, this will be the third in a series of fantastic matches between the two, rather than their infamous clash in the World Heavyweight Championship tournament. I’m going to give it to Kalisto – he’s got merch written all over him, which the WWE are a massive fan of. What’s more, the fans reacted positively to him winning the title on RAW, which, given what then happened the next day, seemed like a test run for him winning the title further down the line. I reckon the Rumble is that time.
Kevin Owens vs Dean Ambrose – Last Man Standing Match for the Intercontinental Championship
Chris, Dan, Daniel – Kevin Owens
Thoughts by Daniel – You could not ask for a better match to end this feud, but Owens has to win. Both man have taken each other to their limit and have both stood out with fantastic mic skill and matches leading up to what is set to their final chapter. Kevin Owens is a prize fighter and needs to win but Dean does not need a title to become a top star. This is going to be an awesome match and will cement both guys as future top stars of the company.
Phillipa, Andrew, Chris, Rich, Dan, Callum, Kevin – The Usos
Vickie, Daniel – The New Day
Thoughts by Callum – The New Day are the most entertaining thing on WWE programming right now. The Usos are the fan voted tag team of the year. What do you get when you combine these two facts? You get a match that has the potential to be one of the best matches on the show. I tend to always side with The New Day on these predictions but this time I’m siding with the Samoan duo of Jimmy and Jey Uso. To have the brothers take the titles on the first big show of the year will add a new dynamic to the companies tag division and considering the fact that they are a face team opens up the possibility of a new heel team being built to rival New Day. Social Outcasts? An NXT call up? So many possibilities which is why The Usos need to take the titles come Sunday.
Royal Rumble Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
Final four –
Phillipa – Triple H, Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt, Surprise Entrant
Callum – Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar, Triple H, Bo Dallas
Andrew – Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar, Bray Wyatt, Sheamus
Chris – Roman Reigns, Triple H, Sheamus, Kevin Owens
Rich – Roman Reigns, Sheamus, Brock Lesnar, Triple H
Dan – Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar, Undertaker, Triple H
Daniel – Roman Reigns, The Rock, Bray Wyatt, Triple H
Vickie – Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar, Triple H, Dean Ambrose
Kevin – Daniel Bryan, Big Show, Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt
Phillipa, Chris, Dan, Daniel – Triple H
Andrew, Rich, Kevin – Roman Reigns
Callum – Brock Lesnar
Vickie – Dean Ambrose
Thoughts by Phillipa – The Royal Rumble has always been my favorite Pay-per- view of the year, and this year it seems there is even more riding on it which only further adds to the excitement.
I think many feuds can be created inside the Battle Royale including one between Bray Wyatt and Brock Lesnar and the returning Triple H could be the one to finally lift the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and continue his feud with Roman Reigns. It seems highly unlikely that Roman Reigns will beat Rey Mysterio’s record in the Rumble and retain his championship, but you can never really count out Roman.
The Royal Rumble is live from 12am on Sunday 24th January on Sky Box Office and on the WWE Network.
