Thursday evening saw a fantastic joint fundraiser between Stoke City Ladies and the Stoke City Community Trust take place at the Britannia Stadium with a host of Stoke City Old Boys and Ladies in attendance. Wayne Thomas, Terry Conroy, Denis Smith, Andy Griffin, John Ruggeiro & Ian Painter all appeared at the event with Thomas, Griffin, Conroy & Painter taking part in a Mastermind event on stage and all six taking part in a Question and Answer session. Andy Griffin won the mastermind event with 10 points from two rounds, pipping Terry Conroy to first by just two points.
On the night, attendees had paid £15 for the evening which included food, entertainment, a raffle, an auction and photo opportunities with the former players. In the auction alone, Steve Buxton and the room helped raise £650 for the two benefactors with £205 of that coming directly from the sale of Asmir Begovic’s signed boots and £200 coming from a framed, signed shirt of this season’s squad.
We spoke to Wayne Thomas, Denis Smith, Andy Griffin and Lou Roberts (of Stoke City Ladies) at the event. Unfortunately the raffle was rigged (*cough cough*) and Lou ended up winning a signed Jonathan Walters shirt which I am not at all bitter about! 😉
We are trying to ascertain how much money the evening raised in total for the two causes but there was a superb turnout for the evening, something absolutely massive for the Ladies team who need £10,000 per annum simply to play in the league with every member of the 40 or so players paying £300 subs each season just to play. Imagine if the Stoke City men had to pay to play and then you might understand how important the club is to the ladies who do a sterling job helping raise their funds. Go girls!
